Plot summary
Robert Bleichner is a high school student in Princeton, New Jersey, who draws cartoons and shows his portfolio to his art teacher, Mr. Katano. After his mentor dies, Robert breaks into Katano's apartment with his friend Miles to collect keepsakes, and the police apprehend him. A public defender, Cheryl Quartermaine, takes his case, and he is released without charges. Robert then tells his parents, Lewis and Jennifer, that he is quitting school to pursue art. He moves to Trenton and shares a basement apartment with Barry and Steven, two older men, and works at a comic book store. Through his job as Cheryl's notetaker he meets Wallace, a client who once worked as an assistant colorist at Image Comics.
