Plot summary
Frida Kahlo speaks in the first person, and the words are her own. They are taken from her diary, from letters, essays and print interviews, and spoken aloud over animation made with artists in Mexico that sets her paintings in motion. Her account moves through the trolley car crash she survived as a passenger, her marriage to the fellow painter Diego Rivera, and her affair with Leon Trotsky. Archive material includes footage shot at her Blue House, photographs and papers held by friends and institutions, and film of her meetings with Trotsky. Kahlo dates her birth to 1910, the year the Mexican Revolution began, though she was born in 1907. Her time in Detroit and in New York also figures in the account.
