Plot summary
Chloe Lipitz, Sadie Mangelsdorf and Lily Bolka are American teenagers adopted from China. Chloe was adopted by a Jewish family that moved from Seattle to Phoenix. Sadie was adopted by a Christian family in Nashville whose parents divorced. Lily grew up in a large Catholic family in Oklahoma City. A DNA test through 23andMe shows that the three are blood-related cousins. After connecting online, they meet in person and travel to China with a genealogist from My China Roots. They visit the places where their birth parents left them, the orphanages where they lived, and possible parents who gave up children for adoption. Their search leads them to confront questions about their identity, their family history and the legacy of China's one-child policy.
