Plot summary
Sandy Ricks lives in the Florida Keys with Flipper, his pet dolphin, while his widowed father Porter is away at school training to be a park ranger. A neighbor keeps an eye on him at the family home. The house stands on state land, and Sandy learns it will be demolished for a highway; he would move in with relatives and Flipper would go to a seaquarium for good. Rather than be parted from the dolphin, Sandy takes his skiff and sets out to sea. Porter comes home to a missing son. In the same waters, the British Hopewell family is on holiday until three escaped convicts seize their sailboat, hold Sir Halsey Hopewell hostage and cast Julia, Gwen and Penny adrift; their small boat reaches the island where Sandy is hiding.

- Flipper's famous "voice" was not a dolphin at all but the sped-up song of a kookaburra, because, as the film's material put it, dolphins have no vocal chords and the noise they make comes through their blowhole.
- In the scene where Flipper tips a rowboat and rams a convict in the stomach, knocking him out, the animal's move was unplanned on set -- a case, the film noted, where "the animal read the script".
