Plot summary

Matthew Greco paints portraits of murders and suicides, and the pictures have brought him success without company or contentment. Answering an advertisement for phone sex puts him in touch with a woman named Edna Claire, whose tastes seem to match his own fascination with death. The pair talk only on the telephone until they agree to meet in the flesh. At the rendezvous a mutilated body is found, and Matthew cannot tell whether the dead woman is Edna. With the victim's identity unsettled, he is drawn into a murder inquiry in which the culprit and the reason for the killing stay hidden.
