Plot summary
The Vogelin ranch sits beside the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, and John Vogelin, a widower, has worked that land his whole life. The Air Force wants to condemn the property to expand a bombing range, and Vogelin is the last holdout among the owners being cleared. He refuses to go. Lee Mackie, a young land developer whose own acreage is also slated for the range, agrees at first to help the Army move the rancher, then joins him in defying the military. The standoff becomes a contest of wills, with Colonel Desalius on the other side, and with Vogelin's grandson Billy Starr and his ranch hand Cruza Peralta caught up in it.
