Tariq Yunus

Biography

Born in India and later moving to Pakistan after partition, Tariq Yunus was an Indian actor known for playing chef Alaudin in the sitcom Tandoori Nights. He started with a children's radio play, then joined an Arts Council theater group while studying geology. In 1962 he left for Britain shortly before his degree exams and, with no formal training, found work as an extra. This led to television parts in The Wednesday Play, Crown Court, Doctor Who, Minder, The Bill, Inspector Morse and House of Cards. He also secured larger roles, among them Jashir Singh Mahail in Gangsters, Dr. Khan in We'll Think of Something and Harry Patel in News at Twelve. Yunus appeared in films such as Ashanti (1979) and A Talent for Murder (1983), and co-starred in the 1988 Screen Two play Lucky Sunil, which drew on his tales of first arriving in London. Later he turned to writing and developing his own projects.
