Plot summary
The musical Fiddler on the Roof arrived on Broadway in 1964, and the people who made it explain how it came together. First-hand accounts come from the show's composer, lyricist, book writer and producer, from members of the original cast, and from the children of its designers and performers. Actors from later Broadway revivals, the 1971 film adaptation and a 2018 Yiddish production describe their own experience with the show. Scholars, critics and theater figures set the musical in the New York of the 1960s and discuss its treatment of religion, civil rights, gender equality and xenophobia. Jewish performers describe what the show meant to their sense of identity, and companies around the world demonstrate how far it traveled. Archival material from the original production accompanies the conversations.
