Plot summary
Photographer Cynthia MacAdams published a book of portraits in 1977, titled Emergence, in which women set aside the cultural rules they had grown up with and embraced feminism. The documentary goes back to those images and to the women who appeared in them. Their accounts are set beside interviews with women of different ages and from different backgrounds, who talk about how they see themselves, about abortion, about race, about childhood and about being a mother. The film also looks at the feminism of the present day, where the push for change continues, and at work in film and art that came out of the movement.
