Trailer

Plot summary

Dietary sugar went largely unmentioned in the first federal dietary guidelines, issued thirty years earlier. Those guidelines effectively allowed unlimited sugar to be added to the foods children ate. Consumption rose, obesity rates climbed, and children grew up heavier than their parents, facing impaired health and shorter lives. Evidence in the film points to sugar in processed foods as an overlooked cause of the obesity epidemic in the United States. Families living with obesity and diabetes are followed for more than two years, and attempts by parents, schools, states and Congress to put healthier food in front of children run into sugar industry interests with deep lobbying resources.

  • Director Stephanie Soechtig spent more than two years during the making of the film following families struggling with obesity, diabetes and other health issues.
