Plot summary
Lonnie 'Lucky Man' Johnson is an aging drag racing star. He drives a dragster sponsored by the oil company Fast Company and works on the engine himself. On a test run the car blows up and Lonnie walks away unhurt. Team boss Phil Adamson tells Elder that the team cannot afford a win that breaks the budget. In the Funny Car class, Lonnie's protégé, Billy 'The Kid' Brocker, gives Gary 'The Blacksmith' Black a close race. Because the fans come to see Lonnie, Adamson puts him in Billy's Funny Car while the dragster is repaired.
