Plot summary

Gabriela Diaz feels unappreciated at her San Francisco design firm, and the week it folds she is also ending a relationship with Dean, who after two years has committed to nothing. Weeks of rejections follow. One wine-filled evening she enters a contest for an abandoned inn in the New Zealand countryside and wins. The prize, Bellbird Valley Farm, is remote and neglected: a crumbling facade, a goat that walks the floorboards, a 1960s Land Rover, and Charlotte, who owns the town's only B&B and wants the property. The previous owner's great-grandson, Charlotte says, entered the farm in the contest to be rid of it. A kitchen plumbing failure sends Gabriela into town, where the hardware store mentions contractor Jake Taylor, a man she has already clashed with twice.
