Plot summary
In the Indiana wilderness in 1817, the Lincoln family survives on what it can work from the land. Abe is a thoughtful, quiet boy who learns farming at the side of his stern father, Tom, and spends his days near his mother, Nancy. Nature and disease make life hard for the settlers around them, and illness reaches the household. Sarah Lincoln becomes Tom's wife and Abe's stepmother. She recognizes ability in Abe and urges that he be educated. The nation is only forty years old, and the story covers three years of Abe's childhood, from about the age of eight to eleven or twelve.
