Plot summary
Dr. Huntington Bailey, a psychiatrist, is traveling by train in 1903 when a friendly older woman turns to him for reassurance during a downpour. She tells him she is on her way to visit her brother Nick and his young wife Allida, whom she helped raise. Reaching New York, Bailey learns the woman from the train has died after taking tea at her brother's house. He then meets the couple: Nick, who is trying to pass Allida off as unstable, keeps her shut inside their town house and cuts her off from the outside world. Bailey sets out to free Allida from the control of her jealous husband.
