Plot summary
Philosophy usually stays indoors, in seminars and journals, but the thinkers here take it into the street. Peter Singer walks along Fifth Avenue, where the windows of expensive shops frame his thoughts about consumption. Michael Hardt considers revolution while surrounded by signs of wealth and leisure. Judith Butler and the disability activist Sunny Taylor walk through San Francisco's Mission District, asking why the culture is so fixed on individualism. Slavoj Žižek, Kwame Anthony Appiah and Martha Nussbaum are among the eight who take part. Driving through Manhattan, Cornel West likens philosophy to jazz and blues and describes how intense the life of the mind can be.
