Plot summary
Pabling, the family patriarch, has died, and the family gathers for the nine-day funeral ritual. Monet, his daughter, is grieving when she suffers a seizure and loses consciousness. As she lies unconscious, her father appears to her with a warning that someone must not be allowed into the house. As the rites go on, the relatives quarrel over the land Pabling left behind. A strange painting turns up in the house, and something sinister comes with it during the days of mourning. Rosa is Monet's mother, Adele is Pabling's legal wife, Andie and Roy are Monet's half-siblings, and Jack is Monet's lover.

- Lorna Tolentino's role in Espantaho was first meant for Vilma Santos, who withdrew over a "problem" with the character and made Uninvited instead, which she called a "dream story"; Chanda Romero's part had been Charo Santos's. Tolentino's casting marked her return to horror films since 1995's Patayin sa Sindak si Barbara.
