Plot summary

Family courts in North America cut parents out of their children's lives after a divorce or separation, a rupture that psychologists call parental alienation in its extreme form. Ashlynn, 23, sets out to undo her adoption by her stepfather, stop the child-support payments that go to the state and find her sister, who thinks their father is a monster. Brian was adopted by his stepmother after she persuaded him to break off contact with his birth mother. Lauren, 12, lives in Canada and reaches her older brother Brandyn, 16, only by text messages after a judge made him a ward of the court and he went to England. The documentary examines the money behind high-conflict custody cases and reports on mediation in Baltimore and shared parenting in Sweden.
