Plot summary
The grown-ups have lost, and children rule an empire of their own in an indeterminate future. There is no central story and no fixed roles. What unfolds instead is a run of tableaux in which children, played by children, carry out cruel, abusive acts against the grown-ups in their power: soldiers of the new order arrest, enslave and execute helpless victims, often at gunpoint. A constitution is read aloud, laying down the empire's basic rules and the belief that children outrank their elders, and it names tomato ketchup the favorite food of the young, which gives the emperor his title. That boy emperor lolls over his parents and shows no interest in the girl chosen as his concubine.
