Plot summary
Dr. Paul Holliston is a geneticist who works out of a clinic in his home and has lived alone since his wife died in a car crash. His sister-in-law, Martha Douglas, assists him. When his car strikes a pregnant Doberman, he keeps one unborn puppy alive in an artificial uterus and speeds its development with an experimental hormone derived from human placental lactogen. The puppy reaches adult size within days and learns quickly. Paul wants to use the method on humans, and Dr. Jim Winston supplies him a female fetus taken from a suicide victim. Her cells age uncontrollably, so Paul turns to the drug methotrexate to stop the process. The fetus grows into a young woman he names Victoria Spencer.
