Plot summary
A childhood memory of Giovanna, an Italian girl who arrived as a refugee during the Second World War, sets the direction of an essayistic documentary. Letters, documents and personal reflection sit beside material gathered in the present, which follows the treatment of refugees and migrants across the Mediterranean, in Lebanon, Italy, Germany and Switzerland. A camera goes aboard Italian rescue ships and into a reception center for migrants in Italy. In one Italian ghetto, footage taken with a hidden camera records rejected asylum seekers who got by through undeclared work and prostitution. Filming also covers Swiss asylum housing, the Italian border and railway stations.
