Plot summary
Annie Herron is living in an orphanage in 1851 when she is put into an arranged marriage with Simon Herron, who takes her to a homestead that is still under construction. There she cooks and cleans for Simon and his brother George. Simon expects her to submit to him at night, and he beats her while drunk; George's efforts to talk to his brother about treating her better go nowhere. George's own interest in Annie leaves her in emotional turmoil. One winter she reaches the fort, exhausted, and says she murdered her husband. She is locked in a cell, where she sews through the months while the prefect Henry Mullen looks into the death.
