Plot summary
The Law family keeps a shoe shop on Wing Lee Street in Sheung Wan during the late 1960s. Big Ears, the younger son, plays pranks, takes little interest in his lessons and is scolded by his parents and teachers. His elder brother Desmond earns top grades, plays music and runs races at the prestigious Diocesan Boys' School, where classmates and teachers admire him. Desmond's girlfriend Flora comes from an affluent family that is preparing to leave Hong Kong for the United States. A British policeman demands money from Mr. Law for letting the family keep the shop, telling Desmond his English will keep him from succeeding.
