Plot summary
Madeleine Keller, 92, is leaving Bry-sur-Marne for a retirement home in Courbevoie. The taxi that comes for her has orders to run the meter from the moment it sets out, and its driver, Charles Hauffman, is in debt and may lose his license. Madeleine asks him to take the long way, through the Paris addresses that mattered in her life, and she tells him about the American soldier she loved during the war, about Mathieu, the son born of that affair, and about her marriage to Ray Haguenot. When Charles commits a traffic violation, Madeleine helps him get out of it.
