Charles Waldron
Biography
Charles Waldron was an American stage and film actor. Born and raised in Waterford, New York, he worked as a Philadelphia bank clerk before taking the juvenile lead in Kidnapped. Nine years of stock theater followed, along with an Australia and New Zealand tour in The Virginian and The Squaw Man. In 1905 he was praised for his lead in The Eternal City at the Alcazar Theatre in San Francisco. His Broadway debut came in 1907 with David Belasco's The Warrens of Virginia, and from 1907 to 1946 he appeared in more than 40 Broadway productions. In 1914 he took the title role in the original production of Daddy Long Legs, opposite Ruth Chatterton, and both were highly praised. Starting with the silent film Big Noise Hank in 1911, he appeared in more than 60 films. He played James Monroe in The Monroe Doctrine in 1939 and was perhaps best known for General Sternwood in The Big Sleep (1946).
