Plot summary
Donny Kohler works at a sanitation incinerator plant, where a co-worker, Ben, is caught in a fire when an aerosol can explodes in the furnace. His supervisor, Vito, blames Donny for not acting; his friend Bobby Tuttle tells him not to dwell on it. Driving home, Donny hears whispering voices. He makes tea for his mother and finds her dead in her sleep. The voices tell him that he is free and can do as he likes, and the sight of a box of matches brings back the burnings she gave him as a boy. Donny lines an upstairs room with steel siding. That night he persuades Kathy Jordan, a florist closing up shop, to sell him flowers for his mother, then offers her a ride.
