Plot summary
Malaysia's drug trade is booming, and a cartel under Singhania controls it. Singhania answers to a dead kingpin named Boris, while the business is really run by his manager, Don, the target of DCP D'Silva and his team. Ramesh, one of Don's associates, wants out of the gang, and Don has him killed. Ramesh's sister Roma then infiltrates the organization to avenge him. Jasjit, released from prison, plans to kill D'Silva over his wife's death. When Don is wounded and slips into a coma, D'Silva approaches Vijay, a street singer who cares for a boy named Deepu, and asks him to impersonate Don in exchange for the boy's education.

- Farhan Akhtar first wanted Hrithik Roshan to play Don, but decided the part needed a more mature actor and cast Shah Rukh Khan in the role Amitabh Bachchan had played in the 1978 original.
- Malaysia's then prime minister Mahathir Mohamad let the Don crew film inside his personal office in the Petronas Towers, having previously refused even Hollywood films permission to shoot in the Towers.
- Farhan Akhtar got the idea to remake Don after listening to a remixed version of a song from the 1978 original film.
