Plot summary
Gabriel and Hilary Hartwicke are toy makers who live in a mansion in the English countryside. Judy breaks in during a violent storm with her stepmother Rosemary and her father David, and the Hartwickes let the three stay. Gabriel hears that Judy's stuffed bear Teddy is gone and hands her a doll, Mr. Punch. Three more travelers arrive out of the rain: Ralph, an American businessman, and two English hitchhikers, Isabel and Enid. The Hartwickes ask the whole group to stay the night. Judy is delighted by the detailed dolls and toys throughout the house, and Ralph, who still loves toys, is pleased too.

- Director Stuart Gordon found Ed Naha's Dolls script at Empire Pictures, where it had been slated as a potential direct-to-video project; Gordon's interest gave the studio confidence to mount it as a much larger production. Inspired by Bruno Bettelheim's The Uses of Enchantment, he conceived it as a horror fairy tale in the vein of Hansel and Gretel.
- After Empire Pictures collapsed, producer Charles Band launched the Puppet Master series at Full Moon Productions; it is considered a spiritual successor to Dolls, and Guy Rolfe appears in several of its films as the puppets' creator and leader, André Toulon.
