Plot summary
D'Artacán is a young swordsman from Gascony who dreams of joining the Corps of Muskehounds, the royal guard of King Luis XIII. His father once served as captain of the Muskehounds in Paris, but was blamed for a crime he did not commit and lost the post. D'Artacán travels to the city to restore his father's name. He presents himself to Treville, who judges him unfit for the Muskehounds, and then runs into three of them, Amis, Dogos and Ponthos, who engage him in a duel. He also meets Juliette, personal assistant to Queen Ana. In a tavern, D'Artacán overhears Count Rochefort and Milady de Winter discussing the overthrow of Luis XIII, part of Cardinal Richelieu's plan to bring war with England.
