Plot summary
Dimethyltryptamine, or DMT, occurs naturally in the human brain and in hundreds of plants, among them ayahuasca, a sacred Amazonian brew. Rick Strassman's studies of the compound, in which volunteers received doses of it, supply the film's central thread. Experts from several fields explain their thoughts and their own experiences with DMT, and the volunteers from the studies discuss the effects the compound produced. A mathematician, a medicinal chemist, an ethnopharmacologist, an anthropologist, a psychologist, an artist and several writers are among those interviewed, and people who have taken the drug on its own or in combination with MAOIs, in the form of ayahuasca, also speak. Their accounts feed into broader theories about the role DMT might play in human consciousness.
