Plot summary
Joana, a civil servant in 2027 Brazil, works in the births, deaths and marriages department of a registry office, and the cases that reach her are mainly divorces. She belongs to Divino Amor, a branch of evangelical Christians that holds marriage and the Christian family to be sacred. From her position she works to dissuade couples who want to separate, and she offers them a kind of physical therapy. She waits for a sign that her efforts have been recognized. She and her husband Danilo are regularly intimate, and she prays constantly, but neither her prayers nor any other method of assistance has fulfilled their desire for a child.
