Plot summary
In 1980, the Queen is looking for a wife for her son Charles. Diana Spencer, nineteen, meets him at a party at Buckingham Palace, where Camilla Parker Bowles is also a guest. Charles has only recently ended a relationship with Diana's older sister Sarah, but Elizabeth II urges him to begin courting Diana, a position the palace staff call the worst job in England. A necklace arrives for Diana with an invitation to a performance by the cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, and Camilla is there too. Photographers start following Diana as Charles, still unsure, weighs the marriage, and when he proposes, a nervous Diana moves into Buckingham Palace.
