Plot summary
The baths in East London take on fifteen-year-old Mike after he leaves school, and Susan, an attendant in her mid-twenties, teaches him the job. A woman client asks Mike to help her out of her clothes and presses his face to her chest while talking amorously about George Best, and he feels violated, refusing the tip Susan offers him. Susan explains that flirtation of that kind is customary there and tells him to serve her own clients, who tip well. Mike becomes infatuated with her, though she is engaged to Chris. He fights boys who make crude remarks about her and lands in the pool, and Susan watches him change into dry clothes afterward.
