Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The film's main location was an abandoned building in Benjamin, Utah, which Joseph Winter found after asking on Facebook for suggestions of abandoned houses. Its existing secret room and cellar were written into the screenplay.
- Troy Larson designed the film's creatures and Mikaela Kester did its makeup effects; when budget limits made the filmmakers consider cutting some gags, the pair found ways to keep them, and Joseph Winter said no computer-generated imagery was used.
- Joseph Winter said the character of Shawn was partly shaped by controversies involving PewDiePie and other YouTubers, and the filmmakers studied established YouTubers so Shawn would seem like someone an audience would actually watch.
