Plot summary
Madison Taylor, an astronomer, is tracking a rogue asteroid the size of Texas on a course toward Earth, but the object exists only in the calculations of her computer program and cannot yet be seen, so the authorities dismiss her warnings. With time running short, she brings in Richard Donovan, a discredited former Air Force colonel, and the two work out a way to bring a decommissioned military laser back into service and destroy the asteroid before it reaches the planet. The laser sits inside an Air Force base, watched by guards who have orders to shoot anyone who approaches it.

- Three versions of the film were made: in the one titled Deadly Skies, the hero Donovan has a relationship with Mark, shown in two intimate scenes plus one in which he gives the reason for his military discharge; the other two versions drop those scenes and run about five minutes shorter.
- The version that keeps the "Don't ask, don't tell" storyline was produced for and advertised in the US by the gay cable channel Here!; Canada showed the censored cut as Force of Impact, and the UK released a slightly different censored cut on DVD as Ultimate Limit.
