Plot summary
Ruy de Mendoza holds the office of sheriff in a Spanish town during the Inquisition. Noblemen of high rank are dying there, repeatedly and with violence, and nobody offers an explanation for the deaths. Mendoza takes on the cases and runs into silence on every side. The people he questions refuse to help him, and they will not even confirm that a killing took place. Each scene is cleared before he can look at the dead and learn who they are.
