Plot summary
Under Copenhagen, a tunnel-boring machine is cutting a new Metro line, and Rie has come down to document the international crew for a piece on the giant drills society depends on. The foreman lets her watch the cutterhead from outside the pressurized chamber, which holds only two oxygen tanks for two men. A carbon monoxide alarm sounds and smoke appears in the tunnel, so he hands her a breather and seals her into the medical bay, turning on the oxygen. The heat in the small compartment climbs toward fifty degrees. Rie loosens the heavy screw on the sealed door and moves into the main drill chamber with Ivo and Bharan. Ivo says they should stay calm and save what air they have, since opening the door would feed any fire.
