Plot summary
Sam is twelve, and the Pathfinder scout troop has made him its victim, pack leader Peter more than anyone. Jasmijn, who cooks for the camp, and the other pack leader, Kris, try to keep Peter and the rest from dominating the boy, though they do not always succeed. This year the troop travels to woods near the French border, and there Peter and Kris tell the campers around the fire about Kai, a werewolf said to live in that forest. Sam runs into a feral boy he takes for the real Kai, and when he tells the others, they laugh at him for believing the campfire tale.
