Plot summary
A television report from Takamatsu Airport, with a typhoon coming, shows Ritsuko to her fiancé Sakutarou Matsumoto, and he sets out after her. At his family home he plays the cassettes he finds there, walking back through his school days. In 1986 he attends his principal's funeral, where Aki Hirose, a school athlete, reads the eulogy and catches his eye. His uncle Shigezou, a photographer, says that the principal had been his lover and asks the teenagers to take the remains from the cemetery. A radio contest with a Walkman as the prize leads Saku to make up a tale about a girl who has leukemia; Aki records a tape to say that lying about such things is wrong, and after he apologizes the two swap long messages on tape.
