Plot summary
Eight teenagers, among them Brady, Claire, Duncan, Kit, Annabelle, Sunny, Foster and Hubs, spend their spring break aboard a houseboat on a remote Southern California lake. Sheriff Bowman warns the group to stay out of danger. Around a bonfire Kit tells a local legend about Harlan, a hotel owner who kept a forty-foot crocodile called Flat Dog and founded a cult that worshiped her as an avatar of the Egyptian god Sobek, until the town drove him out. When Annabelle's dog Princess runs off, the friends come upon a crocodile nest. Duncan crushes one of the eggs, and Hubs slips another into Claire's bag.

- Producer Frank DeMartini said Tobe Hooper made Crocodile trying to recapture the fright of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre; Hooper called it the 25th anniversary of the first Chain Saw and wanted an atmosphere that would "wind you up like that," while promising a stylistically different look.
- Casting director Cathy Henderson-Martin auditioned two thousand people for Crocodile, narrowing the pool down to a few hundred who met with director Tobe Hooper and producer Frank DeMartini, according to DeMartini.
- Fangoria reported that Tobe Hooper "tinkered with" the script, and Hooper said he had been "reshaping some of the dialogue [to suit the actors]," keeping the idea on the page but aiming for spontaneity.
