Plot summary
Late at night, a woman who writes children's books is taken from her home in an unidentified country. The government says she has buried dissident messages in Closet Land, her story of a girl shut in a closet for bad behavior and greeted there by childhood figures who try to comfort her. Officials claim the book encourages disloyalty in naive young readers. The woman is held in one room by a secret policeman who is certain the tale is propaganda and questions her about what he believes she hid in it. Only the two of them appear, in a modern police state that is never named.

- Alan Rickman was not Radha Bharadwaj's original choice for the Interrogator in Closet Land. In a September 2005 production note she named her first picks as Sir Anthony Hopkins, Sir Ian Holm and Peter O'Toole.
- Radha Bharadwaj sat through countless meetings with producers and financiers who wanted her script but wanted someone famous directing it instead of her. Ron Howard and Brian Grazer's Imagine Entertainment backed the film with her as director, in full creative control.
- Radha Bharadwaj said she was, and remains, opposed to the Amnesty International quotes and commercials that tagged Closet Land in its theatrical and video release, even though she supports human rights organizations, because they let people dismiss her film as mere human rights propaganda.
- The 2003 Irish play The Pillowman, written and directed by Martin McDonagh, was noted to have borrowed heavily from Closet Land.
