Plot summary
On the steppes of Inner Mongolia, the shepherd Gombo shares a yurt with his wife, their three children and his mother. Chinese population policy bars the family from a fourth child. Sergei, a Russian truck driver, falls asleep at the wheel and pulls over after a close call; he wanders off on foot, and when he hurries back his truck has run into the river. Gombo finds him and takes him to the yurt, where the family slaughters and cooks a sheep while their guest watches, appalled. Sergei comes to like the quiet of the countryside. Gombo rides to the nearest town for birth control, and Sergei goes with him.
