Plot summary
Peter Winter has schizophrenia, and the world reaches him as strange voices, electrical noise and images that jolt, with feelings that swing without warning. Released from a mental institution, he searches for his daughter Nicole, who lives with her adoptive mother. He believes a transmitter sits beneath the skin on his head and removes it, and mirrors disturb him, so he covers the ones he can reach. He lines his car with newspaper to shut out the outside. His mother, Mrs. Winter, is disturbed by his illness, treats him as a child, and would rather he did not find the girl.

- While shooting interiors in New York in November 1991, Lodge Kerrigan's production of Clean, Shaven was briefly halted when local police officers mistook the filming of a robbery scene for a real one.
- Clean, Shaven was shot on 16mm for a budget of $60,000, and its production ran over a noncontinuous two years because of piecemeal financing.
- Lodge Kerrigan said the idea came from a friend who had schizophrenia; tired of how mental illness was portrayed in movies, he spent a year researching and wrote the script in two months in spring 1990.
- Filmmaker John Waters cited Clean, Shaven as a favorite and presented it as his annual selection at the 2000 Maryland Film Festival.
