Plot summary
After ten years of marriage, Xavier Rousseau and Wendy separate. Wendy moves to New York City with their two children, Tom and Mia, and takes up with John, her new boyfriend. Xavier cannot face the children growing up far away, so he moves there too, at first sharing a Brooklyn loft with his Belgian friend Isabelle, who is pregnant with his child by sperm donation, and her girlfriend Ju. He then moves into Ju's old apartment in Chinatown. A writer, he is trying to finish a novel called Chinese Puzzle, helped by brief visions of Arthur Schopenhauer and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. He talks about the book over Skype with his editor in Paris and often lies about his progress.
