Plot summary
Reine Larsson is eleven and lives with his mother, Harriet, in a suburb of Stockholm. She works at a hospital and has arranged for him to spend the summer at one of the camps the city ran for children who needed time in the countryside; the island in the title holds several of them. The camps were common in Sweden then. She then takes a holiday of her own. Reine, who dreads the sexual maturity approaching him, never goes. He lets her believe he is at camp and stays in the city, spending the summer on his own, wandering Stockholm and encountering odd grown-ups.
