Plot summary
Åmål is a small Swedish town where little happens and trends arrive after they have passed. Elin is popular and outgoing at school, though she finds life there dull and unsatisfying, and her reputation with boys is bigger than the truth. Agnes keeps to herself, has no real friends, and is in love with Elin without finding a way to say it. Her mother decides, over Agnes's objections, to hold a party for Agnes's 16th birthday, and Agnes is afraid that nobody will come. Elin arrives at the house with her older sister Jessica, who dares her to kiss Agnes.

- Variety refused to run an advertisement for the film under its original title, so American distributor Strand Releasing asked for a new one; director Lukas Moodysson took the name Show Me Love from the Robyn song that plays at the end of the film.
- Before Fucking Åmål was finished, politicians in Åmål campaigned to change the title, arguing that it showed the town unfairly and could undermine it as an economic centre; they pressured the makers and Film i Väst, a studio partly financed by Swedish local authorities that include Åmål.
- Although the original title names Åmål, only a few scenes were filmed in the town and none of them ended up in the finished film; most of it was shot in nearby Trollhättan, where production company Film i Väst has its studios.
- Russian singer Lena Katina said producer Ivan Shapovalov was inspired to create the pop duo t.A.T.u. after the film came out; their album 200 km/h in the Wrong Lane includes a track called "Show Me Love".
- The Swedish band Broder Daniel contributed three English-language songs to Fucking Åmål, enjoyed a jump in popularity after the release, and brought out an EP also titled Fucking Åmål.
- The town of Åmål, whose name is missing from the English title, eventually embraced the publicity, founding the pop music "Fucking Åmål Festival" in the early 2000s.
- The creators of the 2018 Netflix series Everything Sucks! named Show Me Love the "biggest influence" on the making of that show.
