Plot summary
Brazil's first communications magnate, Assis Chateaubriand, known as Chatô, suffers a stroke in 1960. In his delirium he pictures himself put on trial during a prime-time Sunday television special, where the women he loved and the rivals he crossed line up to settle old scores. The life behind that imagined courtroom begins in poverty in Paraíba and carries him to the head of the Diários Associados, the media empire he founds. Across the late 1930s and on into the early 1960s his influence spreads through the country's public life, and it earns him the comparison to a Brazilian Citizen Kane.

- In 2008 Brazil's Comptroller General of the Union ordered director Guilherme Fontes to return R$36.5 million in public funds for Chatô, o Rei do Brasil after an audit found irregularities in his company's accounts. The case was brought by the national cinema agency Ancine.
- Director Guilherme Fontes was sentenced to three years, one month and six days in prison for tax evasion, but the sentence was converted to seven hours of weekly community service plus the donation of 12 food baskets worth R$1,000 each to social institutions in Rio de Janeiro.
- When American Zoetrope asked to see the source material, a team from the Instituto Alumni translated Fernando Morais's book into English within a week at a cost of US$20,000 and sent it electronically to the studio.
