Plot summary
In 1957 in Box Hill, Australia, eight-year-old Celia Carmichael is reeling from the death of her grandmother. After the funeral, she pictures a monstrous Hobyah reaching into her room, though the noise turns out to be a possum. She meets the Tanner children next door, but her father Ray bans her from their house after learning their parents are communists. To make up for it, he buys her a pet rabbit called Murgatroyd, even though he sees rabbits as pests. At school Celia is picked on by her cousin Stephanie, and at church a priest attacks the Australian Peace Council as a communist front. Celia takes comfort in imagined visits from her grandmother and withdraws into fantasy.
