Plot summary
Bayir, twelve and the eldest son, lives with his family on the flat Kalmyk steppe near the vast Caspian Sea. The baby camel Altynka is born there under a cloud shaped like a camel. The family's debts lead Bayir's father to sell Altynka to a Russian filmmaker, and Mara, the calf's mother, escapes to search for her calf. Because losing her would be a disaster for the family, Bayir takes his rugged sidecar motorcycle and rides out across the steppe to bring her back. The steppe is boundless, and the search brings encounters and dangerous situations that test his limits.
