Plot summary
Joaquín is seventy-five and newly alone: his wife has died after a long illness, and he leaves the city for the small town of his birth. Loneliness is his only company now, and he has nothing to do but wait his turn. Poli, his closest friend there, will not let him withdraw into that abandonment. He has made a list of the single women in the village, so that Joaquín can meet them and see whether something comes up. Joaquín thinks the whole idea is nonsense and turns it down. Poli does not relent and lies in wait for him.
