Plot summary
Marguerite Gautier passes her days in late-sixties Rome at the villa of her benefactor, Count De Mauriac, among parties, encounters, drugs and casual relationships. Her love of camellias has earned her the name Camille, and the elderly count, who met her after his own daughter died of an overdose, treats her almost as a daughter. Armand Duval comes to Rome for business his father has given him. At a social event he meets Marguerite and is smitten straight away. She treats him as one more temporary affair amid her other involvements, and his jealousy grows. Her feelings for him change, and she decides to spend the summer with him alone, leaving quietly for Porto Ercole on De Mauriac's yacht.
